Leukemia Is The White Blood Cell Disease
INTRODUCTION: Leukemia means white blood (Greek leukos, white; aima, blood). It is a cancer of the bone marrow or blood and is characterized by an abnormal growth of blood cells, usually white blood cells (leukocytes)and is divided into acute and chronic forms.
It affects the lungs, Kidneys, digestive tract or other parts of the body and can also collect in the testicles causing edema and swelling. It is one of the most common cancers among children, although it is not just a children’s disease, as many of us think.
It is newly diagnosed in about 29,000 adults and 2000 children every year in the US and has four primary types plus many sub-types of which only some of them are common in children.
Leukemia that has spread to the brain may produce central nervous system effects, such as headaches, seizures, weakness, blurred vision, balance difficulties, or vomiting and the disease, or the chemotherapy used to treat it, can cause anemia.
ACUTE LEUKEMIA: Leukemia in it’s acute form is characterized by the rapid increase of immature blood cells, and is potentially curable; However only a small number of patients are cured with todays therapy. It begins with one or a few white blood cells that have a lost or damaged DNA sequence and becomes worse quickly and may make you feel sick right away.
Leukemia tends to develop suddenly, however some chronic varieties may exist for years before they are even diagnosed. Immediate treatment is required due to the rapid growth and accumulation of the malignant cells, which then spill over into the blood stream and spread to other organs.
Although acute leukemia must be treated immediately, chronic forms of the disease are sometimes monitored for some time before any treatment is begun to ensure maximum effectiveness of therapy.
CHRONIC LEUKEMIA: Chronic leukemia is distinguished by the excessive build up of relatively mature, but still abnormal, blood cells and often goes undetected for many years until it is identified in a routine blood test. It is more common between ages 40 and 70 and is rare among young people.
It tends to gets worse slowly and may not produce symptoms for years. Like many cancers, it is a disease that usually occurs in old age. Doctors often find chronic leukemia during a regular checkup, before there are any noticeable symptoms. In grownups, the acute forms occur in those of all ages, whereas the chronic forms tend to occur in people over 40 years. Although slow-growing chronic leukemia can also be seen in children, although it is very rare, accounting for less than 50 cases in children each year in the US.
TREATMENT: Treatment for leukemia is complex and it depends largely on age and health, the type and how far it has spread in the body. Treatment is usually considered necessary when the patient shows signs and symptoms such as low blood cell count. Generally speaking, all treatment is divided into several different phases. In children, an intensive 6-month treatment program is needed followed by 2 years of chemotherapy.
For children with low-risk, standard therapy usually consists of three drugs (prednisone, L-asparaginase, and vincristine) for the first month of treatment. High-risk patients receive higher drug doses plus treatment with extra chemotherapeutic agents. Follow-up therapy for ALL patients usually consists of: supportive care, such as intravenous nutrition and treatment with oral antibiotics.
In general, the indications for treatment are: declining hemoglobin or platelet count, progression to advance stages of the disease, painful and disease related over-growth of lymph nodes or spleen, lymphocyte doubling time (an indicator of lymphocyte reproduction) occuring in less than twelve months. The over all strategy is to control bone marrow and total body disease while using specific treatment for the central nervous system (CNS), when necessary. Maintenance treatments may be used to prevent re-ocurrence of the disease once remission has been accomplished. Regardless the plan or strategy, it is very important for the patient to understand the treatment that he or she is receiving and the reasons behind it.

Pour out your heart about how much you admire the strength she shows in the darkest moments. Let her know you know that living with illness is difficult and that you are blessed to be married to someone with so much character and joy. Remind her that you love her and are in it “in sickness and in health.”
Buy her something she wouldn’t buy herself like a $20 bottle of lotion, a CD she’s mentioned or a rocking chair for the patio. What is something that she could enjoy when she isn’t feeling well? Pamper her.
Schedule a retreat for her at home. Find care for the kids, bring home dinner, and don’t say anything when you come home at 6 p.m. and she’s still in her pajamas.
Hide romantic notes in places she will find them. Stick a note in the fridge that says, “I know it’s hard for you to go grocery shopping. Please know how much it means to me that you keep this box stocked just for me!”
Being romantic at home isn’t hard. Purchase a fondue pot and tell her that you will bring home something to dip every Wednesday night so you two can sit and have a conversation over candlelight (and cheese, chocolate, marshmallow, etc.)
Need conversation starters? Buy a game such as “To Know You … Better” or buy a book. Just do a search on “book of questions” for dozens of options. There are still a million things you don’t know about each other, and yes, talking does create intimacy.
Take the time to create the atmosphere. The new flameless candles that operate on a battery are great for a romantic environment. Make up a play list on your ipod that will take her back to simpler days. Bring a big bouquet of roses into the bedroom when she isn’t looking.
There is no perfect way to romance your wife because every woman is different and needing different things. So communication is the key. Ask, “What are your biggest concerns right now? How can I help you feel more loved?”
The good news is that perfection is not a requirement. Just by making the effort to increase the romance in the relationship will score you some big points. And she may not let you even have a chance to finish reading that book on romancing your wife, because if she sees you reading it, your willingness to read it may be all the romance she needs. One last piece of advice, doing the dishes or the laundry really can be the best way to your wife’s heart.

The 2008 National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week, September 8-14, 2008, has announced this year’s theme: “Hope Can Grow From the Soil of Illness.”
Lisa Copen, the founder of Rest Ministries, who sponsors this annual event says, “Illness is usually accompanied by a period of grief because so many dreams and hopes can die when we lose our health. But there is also hope for a new purpose, most often, one that we never would have imagined if we had our health.”
The next month will feature bloggers on the topic of illness, all of who have found a renewed sense of direction, despite the life-altering changes illness has brought into their lives.
Copen, 39, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia at the age of 24 and clearly remembers wondering what her new purpose would be that would get her up on the mornings she could barely move.

It is the rare individual that loves mosquitoes. Not only is that buzzing noise and subsequent bite annoying, it can lead to far more than just an itchy bite. Yes, mosquitoes carry some very nasty, deadly diseases that can even kill you.

Encephalitis is a nasty disease transported by the mosquito host as well. It is a viral infection that severely impacts the brain by causing inflammation. The brain literally swells until it is damaged when crushed up against the skull.
Yellow Fever is another viral disease that mosquitoes host and transport. Yellow Fever is similar to other viral fevers in most cases, but a little less than twenty percent of the people that get it have a much worse result.
Yellow Fever can be so bad for a minority of patients that it plays out like a horror movie. High temperatures remain consistent and then something scary happens. The body turns yellow and you bleed through every orifice. Fifty percent die in fourteen days.

4 Issues You Will Encounter When Leading an Illness Support Group
After planning for your support group for weeks, or even months, it’s time for your first meeting. You feel rather organized. You’ve prepared a proposal to start up a support group which was approved by an organization or church. You’ve put together a welcome folder for new members and you have scheduled your topic or speakers for coming months.
Does all of this mean that your meetings will run perfectly? Despite your best plans, the chances are unlikely. Here are a few frustrations that you may encounter during those first meetings s they are worth acknowledging and being prepared for in advance.
(1) Only a couple of people come.
How it feels: Although it can be disappointing to put so much work into the meeting and have just one or two people come (or maybe none at all!) realize that this can be typical. Don’t take it personally. You are fighting an uphill battle in getting people to attend. When they feel ill, they don’t especially want to go and socialize with others. When they feel well, they’d rather do something much more fun then sit around and talk about the times they are in pain.
What to do: A good motto is “Hope for the best and prepare for the few.” HopeKeepers is a Christian small group program that serves the chronically ill, and their founder says, “Although it’s discouraging when just a couple of people come, we try to concentrate on the fact that God planned that specific meeting. Once I had just one person come to my group and I was bummed out, but we ended up having the best conversation. Later she said that she was terribly shy and probably wouldn’t have even spoken if others had attended the meeting.”
Keep a summary of your lesson plan, even including the topics that were discussed. This way you can easily “replicate” the meeting another time with little preparation. Lastly, consider calling people and, without adding undo pressure, ask them what challenges are preventing them from coming? Is it transportation? Is it the time of day? How could you make it easier for more people to come?
(2) No one wants to follow your lesson plan.
How it feels: As though your ideas aren’t interesting or inspiring enough to keep their attention. It can also feel as though no one appreciates all of the time you spent in preparation.
What to do: Allocate more than usual flexibility in your timeline at first and then add in more structure as the group meets and you begin to see how it flows. It’s most likely that people are so excited to meet one another who understand what they experience living with daily chronic pain, that they just want to talk. You’ve provided a forum where the floodgates of pent up emotions are sure to spill over as soon as they realize they are allowed to be honest and vulnerable. It’s impossible to hold up a book and point people back toward your lesson plan when one of the members is sobbing over her daughter who has told her mom her illness is “all in your head” and until she gets over it they are done. This type of situation can occur at any meeting, but it may be more frequent during the first month.
Talk to your group about your desire to allow people to share, but also that you want everyone to leave feeling refreshed. So regardless of what happens during the meeting, you will plan to end with an uplifting article, scripture, poem, prayer, devotional, etc.
(3) Everyone just complains about everything! Their relationships, the medical professionals, their illness-the list is never ending.
How it feels: Sometimes, like you are surviving a small mutiny. You will find many emotions that have not been expressed until now. People have deep wounds about things people have said to them or how they’ve treated them; unjust consequences due to their illness; perhaps even medical errors. It may feel like they want you to fix the chaos or else they will talk incessantly about it until you do.
What to do: Write some simple procedures before your first meeting if possible, and include the “venting guidelines.” Read “10 Ways to Make Your Illness Support Group Uplifting.” One practical step is to set a timer and allow everyone to have 60 seconds to share their most exasperating experience of the week. Have a contest with a prize for who handled their frustrating situation the best or with the most creativity. Be silly and give an award for someone to take home for the week, like “Aggravated the Alligator Award” (a rubber alligator).
Don’t forget to include others in the conversation. For example, say, “Jane, some of us can really relate to what you are feeling. Is there someone here who would like to share how she or he has dealt with these emotions?” If you are doing a lesson plan, say, “Since I want to get you all out of here on time, lets move on to question six, and if someone has some encouragement for Jane, they can share that with her after our meeting.” (Make sue that someone is you if no one else steps forward.)
(4) One person continually dominates the conversation; she takes over the meetings and completely disregards your plans or people who are trying to talk.
How it feels: Infuriating! After all your preparation it can be annoying to have someone override your entire meeting and take the group down a path that lacks the encouragement you want to provide. You justifiably could be concerned about her impact on the group and how many people she could scare away.
What to do: Set boundaries at the beginning. It’s important that people in the group are allowed to share their frustrations, but they also need to respect the others in the group. They must watch their language, the amount of time they dominate a conversation, and how they talk about other people’s treatments or decisions.
Put together some simple guidelines (not anything too overwhelming) and pass these out to new members in a welcome folder. When someone is dominating the group, and she doesn’t get your hints, privately speak to her one-on-one. Consider if she would be a good candidate for being in charge of some part of the meeting, like icebreakers, so she feels she has something solid she can share with the group. As these type of situations occur, people can be gently reminded of the guidelines they were given when they first joined the group. It’s easier to refer to them and ask if she has any questions; this way she won’t take it as such a personal attack on her behavior.
To wrap this up, know that facilitating a support group is often assumed to be a simple task. It’s a myth that you let people know you’re getting together to share and support one another, lots of people show up, and everyone’s personalities just click. It rarely works this way.
It takes a extraordinary person to lead a group; one who can effectively communicate. One who has a gift in gently guiding people in the direction you wish them to go, so that the group is a place to lay down one’s burdens, not pick up more arms. And don’t ever forget that there are no leaders that feel one-hundred percent proficient. Having a willingness to learn and listen is one of the best ways you can become a leader blessed with a group where lives are changed.
