You can stop drinking, it just takes some hard work

by David Peters

There are so many people out in the world who are addicted to alcohol, and don’t know that there is a way of stopping, and that it will surely be in your best interest to do so. How many people drink after work, until they go to bed, wake up with hangovers, go to work, and do the same thing all over again? Or, we have the weekend drinkers who refrain during the week, and get smashed on the weekends. Usually these weekenders proceed to make fools of themselves in front of family, friends, and neighbors. They think they’re the life of the party, but it’s more like the clown of the party. How many purses have been lost or stolen when one doesn’t remember what they did with it? How many cars have been lost in parking lots? How many drunk driving accidents have killed, hurt, and maimed? How many people lose their family because of alcohol? They get a drunk driving ticket, lose their job, lose their house, and their family moves on without them?

Stopping long-term, regular, heavy drinking requires a major life change, and the difficulty of doing this should never be underestimated. The first step in the healing process for these patients is to admit that they are alcoholic and that they have a drinking problem. The second step is to truly want to stop drinking. The third step is to accept the fact that they must never drink again. For most people, the next step is to admit that they need help to stop drinking and maintain abstinence. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a “cured” alcoholic. Alcoholism is a chronic disease that can go into remission, sometimes indefinitely, but relapse can be provoked by many life situations, both good and bad.

Will these problems go away? No. These problems will last for a child’s whole life. People with severe problems may not be able to take care of themselves as adults. They may never be able to work. What if I am pregnant and have been drinking? If you drank alcohol before you knew you were pregnant, stop drinking now. You will feel better and your baby will have a good chance to be born healthy. If you want to get pregnant, do not drink alcohol. You may not know you are pregnant right away. Alcohol can hurt a baby even when you are only 1 or 2 months pregnant.

Most parents of teenagers who are old enough to get their driver’s licenses don’t have a professional race car driver who can make an impression on their kids. But the good news is that as parents there are many things you can teach your child that will have the same effect. Don’t push kids who are not ready. Most teenagers can’t wait to get behind the wheel for the first time because they know that driving will give them new freedoms. But if your child resists getting a license at 16, let him know that he can wait until he feels he is ready. And if you feel your child should wait until 17 to drive, when he will be more responsible, don’t let your child pressure you into letting him drive just because other kids drive at 16.

Alcoholism is a devastating disease that effects millions of people every year. Recognizing alcoholism in yourself or someone else can be difficult. Alcoholism is defined as a disease that allows a persons use of alcohol to interfere with their life and the basic functioning of their daily tasks, needs and responsibilities. The clinical way of looking at alcohol is by examining the amount of alcohol a person consumes. A women who drinks more than seven drink per week or more than three drinks a day and a man who drinks more than 14 drinks per week or four drinks in a day would be considered an alcoholic. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor.

At the very least stop drinking 4 – 6 hours before going to bed. This grace period will allow your body a chance to for the effects of the alcohol to wear off and reduce the effects that it may have on your sleeping, helping you to sleep without snoring.Sedatives such as sleeping pills behave much in the same way as alcohol, and amplify the affect if you take them while drinking, causing your body to relax its muscles and inducing many of the same symptoms as alcohol. When you snore, you not only do you hurt yourself – studies have shown that a spouse, or significant other, can lose up to an hour of sleep per night. Causing them not only to be ‘cranky’ in the morning, but potentially destroying your relationship. So, don’t just do it for yourself – do it for your loved one!

And no, drinking beer is not the same as drinking water unfortunately. Beer has a lot of calories, and the first place it goes is around your mid-section. By the way, this doesn’t mean that you have to stop drinking alcohol all together. Just control your intake as you would your diet. Exercise will not only help you lose your love handles but also help your posture as it will strengthen and stabilize your core (including your abs). So, if you have been suffering from some minor back aches or even chronic back pain, you may find that by engaging in exercise it may dissipate or disappear forever. By the way, if you only engage in ab exercises without any aerobic or resistance (weight) training, you may find your love handles growing larger! Yikes! This is because your muscles are growing yet your body fat percentage is staying the same. By the way, you don’t have to train like a marathon runner or a bodybuilder to lose those love handles. Start out by doing small things, like walking to the local store instead of driving; or taking the stairs instead of the elevator or the escalator. But, if you want to seriously transform your body (not only losing your love handles but shedding a ton of body fat) then you will need to get serious and do some intense workouts.

Alcoholism – Stopping Drinking is essential

by Ed Philips

There are a lot of people who think that they are not alcoholics just because they have the ability to consume large amounts of alcohol without losing control of their senses, but in the true sense of the word, these people are also alcohol dependent. First Step: Once you are sure that you are an alcoholic, then the first step to take in order to kick the habit is to abstain from drinking as much as possible. While it is easy to tell somebody to cut down on consumption of alcohol, it is impossible for the alcoholic to follow this advice because of the condition that he or she is suffering from. Therefore, it is important for alcohol dependent people to seek support at these times from people who have managed to or are in the process of kicking the habit and this is the core group forming Alcohol Anonymous. Alcohol Anonymous is the best kind of support group that anybody can ever think of joining, because it is one of those rare organizations in the world that is apolitical non-denominational and multiracial. The group has absolutely no social, political or religious leanings and the only leaning the group has is towards reaching a collective goal of non-alcoholism.

With new technology in, many cars will have sensors installed in them like alarm systems in case the driver inside falls asleep. They will soon be fitted with anti collision devices so that the car brakes automatically if it is about to crash with another object in the front or the back. Unfortunately if you are detained for DUI, then hiring a DUI lawyer proves to be the best decision. Driving under the influence can have serious consequences on you if you are involved in a car accident. The offender may face penalties like jail or prison, penalties or fines, vehicle impoundment, etc. The DUI lawyer is accustomed with the ins and outs and procedures involved with DUI charges and are your best bet if you find yourself in such a predicament. So just take into account your actions and act as a responsible citizen that can actually set an example to other people as well. Make sure it is not you who would unnecessarily force others to drink at your parties. Prevention is always better than cure. Hence, drinking and driving should not go jointly.

Because alcohol affects many organs in the body, long-term heavy drinking puts you at risk for developing serious health problems, some of which are described below. More than 2 million Americans suffer from alcohol-related liver disease. Some drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, as a result of long-term heavy drinking. Moderate drinking can have beneficial effects on the heart, especially among those at greatest risk for heart attacks, such as men over the age of 45 and women after menopause. But long-term heavy drinking increases the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some kinds of stroke. The pancreas helps to regulate the body’s blood sugar levels by producing insulin. The pancreas also has a role in digesting the food we eat. Long-term heavy drinking can lead to pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. This condition is associated with severe abdominal pain and weight loss and can be fatal.

Here are quick and simple ways that we can care for our skin. Nourish your skin by eating the proper foods. This means a healthy and balanced diet. A healthy and balanced diet promotes general well-being and optimizes the body to function at its best. To have healthy skin, eat plenty of seed food, i.e. fruits that contain seeds, and vegetables – organic is better as it contains additional nutrients. Drink plenty of water. The recommended eight glasses of water a day is essential in maintaining the elasticity and suppleness of skin. Water also clears your skin and aids in the proper elimination of waste. Remember, less waste products in your body, more beautiful skin you would have. Exercise regularly. Exercise is good for our hearts and bodies. Even our skin benefits from exercise since blood circulation is increased, thus bringing enough oxygen and nutrients to the rest of our bodies. Exercise also triggers the body to produce more sebum which is natural moisturizer for body. Be smoke- and alcohol-free. Smoking tends to destroy the Vitamin C in your body and damage the elastic tissues that keep the skin tight. Drinking liquor on the other hand tends to expand your blood vessels causing red spots and itchiness on your skin.

An alcoholic can neither refrain from drinking nor control the amount of alcohol he consumes. Once the addiction has set in, physical and psychological dependency on alcohol are expected. There is an estimated 5.6 million people in the United States alone that are alcohol is and about one fourth of them are suffering from serious complications. There is a varying rate of alcoholism among populations from various geographical locations. The country with the highest incidence of alcoholism among its population is France followed by the United States, Switzerland and Sweden. There is a lower incidence rate of alcoholism in rural areas compared with urban areas. Most of these alcoholics are found in homes, factories and offices and only very few of them are the “skid row” type of people.

If you just crave the occasional glass of wine or beer, make sure you are aware of the craving and make a conscious choice to have a glass, or skip it. Don’t let your cravings or emotions make the decision for you. If you find yourself addicted to alcohol and are unable to not give in to the cravings, please seek professional help. Alcohol addiction is very serious and the earlier you seek treatment, the easier it will be to kick the habit and take control over your alcohol cravings.

What Causes Hemorrhoids? 8 Common Hemorrhoid Causes To Avoid

by Sherie Moor

As 4 out of 5 American people suffer from the painful affliction of hemorrhoids, it may be helpful to know what causes hemorrhoids. You may also be interested in just what hemorrhoids are. Simply put, hemorrhoids (also called piles) are veins in your rectum which have become enlarged and are quite painful.

There are two different kinds of hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are swollen rectum veins located inside the body, and they can’t be felt or seen by you unless they’ve progressed to the severe stage. External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, also swell and can be felt and seen outside the body through the anus.

Doesn’t sound good, right? What causes this to happen? Well, the number one culprit of hemorrhoid causes seems to be constipation. If you constantly strain while having a bowel movement, you’re putting strain on your intestinal walls as well, which leads to the veins in those walls swelling and becoming hemorrhoids.

Pregnancy is a big cause of hemorrhoids for women as well, because constipation occurs frequently during pregnancy. In addition, women experience increased pressure due to the baby’s weight on their body, and this unfortunate combination can cause a hemorrhoid problem. In fact, many pregnant women feel that the pain and discomfort of hemorrhoids surpasses the feeling of morning sickness.

What else causes hemorrhoids? Here are some of the following habits to stay away from:

- Don’t sit for too long without getting up/walking around for a few minutes after every hour or so of sitting

- Standing up for too long without sitting down periodically

- Reading while going to the bathroom, which causes you to sit longer than you should

- Not getting enough fiber and water into your diet, both of which help lubricate the bowel movements and make them softer and easier to pass

Also, overweight people have a greater chance of getting a hemorrhoid affliction. And anyone with a family history of hemorrhoids has an increased risk, too.

Lysine for Cold Sores – Will It Work on Your Cold Sore?

by Denny Bodoh

Lysine and cold sores – an excellent remedy if used correctly. By the time you are done reading this short article, you will know the truth about using lysine for cold sores.

Lysine for cold sores is much talked about these days. The truth is – lab and empirical data strongly support the use of lysine for cold sores.

Why can lysine stop cold sore, fever blister or oral herpes outbreaks? How do I use it for best results?

Good questions for sure.

However, it is important to know what actually creates the cold sore before using lysine for cold sores.

The primary cause of all cold sore events is the herpes simplex virus. Whether you call them cold sores, fever blisters, or oral herpes outbreaks, they are all the same thing.

An extremely contagious virus, it currently infects about 89% of humans around the world. The majority of these people catch the herpes simplex virus before 12 years of age.

The herpes virus is usually dormant in the nerve ganglia. This is root of the nerves behind the ear, where they connect with other nerves. Oral herpes cold sore events only occur if this virus becomes active.

The herpes simplex virus, because it lives in your nerve cells, can quickly sense a change in your immunity. If so, it will activate to replicate. Stress is the primary trigger that brings on a cold sore event.

Herpes virus moves to the surface through the set of nerve fibers that it has chosen to occupy. At the surface, each virus particle picks out a nerve cell to enter.

Each virus then forces that cell to act as a virus factory and construct herpes virus clones. When the cell is swollen with fresh virus, it is destroyed to free the new virus.

Your open cold sore is caused by this destruction of millions of adjacent cells.

Arginine, an amino acid, is the main ingredient your cells need to create this new herpes virus. Arginine is a common protein found in many foods. Chocolate and nuts are quite rich in this protein.

Your cells have a special area to store proteins, such as arginine, inside the cell.

Lysine is also an essential amino acid. Dairy and fish are good sources of lysine. New herpes virus can not be created using lysine. It is like putting water in your gas tank.

Here is the good news. Arginine and lysine fight over the same storage space within your cells. The more your cells store lysine, the less arginine it can hold.

You can easily lower the cell’s arginine supply by raising lysine intake. This is a tactic many people use to stop the progression of a cold sore and prevent future oral herpes outbreaks. You are, in affect, starving out the virus.

Lysine and arginine fight each other. Increase lysine in your diet with vegetables, fish and dairy products. Decrease arginine in your diet by leaving out arginine foods such as chocolate, nuts and grains.

Adjusting your eating habits to control oral herpes, cold sore or fever blister attacks is not usually much fun. Most folks prefer lysine in capsules for the bulk of their treatment. This amino acid is inexpensive and you can find it anywhere.

Lysine capsules normally come in 500-milligram size. You can get much more lysine into your system this way than trying to eat more lysine food. And you can easily take extra lysine rather than go without chocolate.

Lysine is very safe. Commonly people take 1000 to 4000 milligrams per day during a cold sore and 500 to 1000 milligrams daily as a preventative measure. Again, you can adjust this depending on how often you get them.

But, watch out for the hype.

Lysine for cold sores is powerful when used as an internal treatment. But it does not work very well as a topical treatment.

I mention this because you will find cold sore remedies at the store that contain lysine. These are designed to put directly on the sore. The lysine does not absorb and get into the cells this way. Save your money.

Lysine for cold sores is one of several really good cold sore remedies that you will find useful.

I would like to give you a lot more tips about lysine for cold sores and some additional cold sore remedies that will super-charge your efforts, but I have run out of room here.

Whether you suffer from frequent outbreaks, or each one seems to last forever, lysine is a great treatment choice. But do not quit here. There are other cold sore remedies you will discover that work equally as well as lysine for cold sores.

The Cold & Flu Recipe That Works Like Magic

by Sue Young

I’d like to share this exceptional elixir with you. It is my mother’s remedy for colds and flu. I have used it whenever necessary all my life.

Cut up some citrus fruit (lemons, oranges, satsumas, grapefruit etc) and put in a big jug together with any or all of the following:

ginger root cut up

garlic chopped up

whisky or brandy or any other tipple you prefer

a big lump of honey

You could if you wish add some spices and herbs to the mix. When you have finished adding ingredients, pour boiling water over it all and brew it like it was tea. Drink as much as you can comfortably manage of this hot brew until you start to feel better. You can add more boiling water and top up as necessary until it tastes too dilute to continue. You then need to chop up some more ingredients and start the whole process again!

This recipe will literally act like magic whenever you are ill. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

The Magic of Garlic

Of all the culinary items that’s best for a detox, garlic comes top of the list. It cleanses the gastro-intestinal system, sterilizing it and creating a harmonious environment throughout. It has a cooling and cleansing action and is very soothing. It removes harmful globs of cholesterols and fats and cleanses the liver, encouraging it to health. It settles other secondary organs of the digestive system. Garlic is also good for the cardiovascular system, cleansing the arteries, improving the health of the skin, the balance of the mind and one’s overall health.

A good recommendation is to eat one clove at least every day.It is best not to cook it and its benefits get destroyed and don’t fry it with onions either. Garlic can be added to food once it has been cooked. In this way you will enjoy its full health benefits.

If you find that there is a strong smell coming away from your skin after you’ve eaten garlic, then this demonstrates how much you needed to detox. This is in fact a real indicator of your requirement to detox your body. The thing is to just keep going. Get one garlic clove down you every day and you’ll find that in no time at all the smell will disappear. This will meant that the garlic is doing its job in getting rid of all those nasty toxins.

Coeliac Disease

by John Francis

Coeliac disease is an intolerance to gluten, this protein is treated by your body as harmful, and causes your bowel to become irritated and inflamed. Gluten damages the lining of the small intestine, and can result in deficiencies of both minerals and nutrients, as they are absorbed through this part of the bowel. There is a hereditary basis to coeliac disease, and it is known to run in families.

Managing coeliac disease involves the complete avoidance of gluten in all its forms. This means avoiding gluten for life which may be difficult. You will need to adapt all meals, and be very careful when going out for meals in restaurants.

Sticking to a completely gluten free diet will require perseverance and encouragement. You may need to consult a dietitian to begin with, this will ensure that you do not miss out on necessary nutrients.

There are four grains, wheat, barley, rye, oats, that contain gluten. These four grains are the most popular flours used in baking, which means that you will not be able to eat the majority of baked goods. However there are gluten-free options becoming more readily available.

Processed foods often use wheat flour as a binder or filler which means there is gluten present in these products. I have heard some people say that wheat starch is gluten-free as the protein is processed out of it, however it is not possible to remove it all and there are often traces left. Processed foods do not have to declare wheatflour as an ingredient when it is used in this way, so you should check with the manufacturer if you are unsure about its gluten-free status.

Meat, fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables are all foods that are naturally gluten-free. And although cross contamination may occur during processing, rice, beans and some cereals are also gluten-free.

There are several different kinds of gluten-free flour available to use, including potato flour, rice flour, and buckwheat, as well as corn flour. Wheat flour can be substituted with a blend of these gluten-free flours for any of your recipes.

It is not advisable to substitute a single gluten-free flour in the place of wheat flour, you should use a blend of two or three different gluten-free flours instead. Some gluten-free flour, such as pea flour or buckwheat, have strong flavours which may not taste very nice in some recipes.

Crohn’s Disease: How To Tell If You Have It

by Alex Morgan

Crohn’s disease is relatively common, with approximately 1 in every 1500 people suffering from the condition, although it occurs slightly more often in women and in smokers. The disease causes inflammation of the lining of the walls of the digestive tract and can occur anywhere along its length; but is most often found in patches of the small and large intestine. Symptoms vary for person to person, both in severity and frequency . Some people have very mild symptoms and the disease can go undiagnosed for years. Others will have very severe, frequent attacks and will require hospitalization.

In Crohn’s disease the lining of part of the digestive tract becomes swollen and painful. Ulcers may form which can then bleed, or on healing, can leave scar tissue that narrows the tract and cause a complete blockage. Sufferers will often experience pain, its location depending on the exact site of the inflammation. If the intestine is affected the pain will occur in the lower right abdominal area and is sometimes mistaken for appendicitis.

Diarrhea is a very common symptom of the disease and is often mixed with blood or pus. People will feel an urgency to go to the toilet, and many will also experience tenesmus, a feeling of needing to go to the toilet but having nothing to pass when you get there. General health can deteriorate as sufferers become anaemic due to heavy bleeding, or deficient in some vitamins and minerals since they are unable to absorb food properly. This causes weight loss and severe tiredness.

Diagnosis of Crohn’s disease is normally given after a number of tests and investigations have been carried out. If a patient has been showing signs of the disease such as weight loss, pain and diarrhea for three or more weeks, their doctor will normally take stool and blood samples, arrange for endoscopic examinations and barium x- rays, and may also have biopsies taken, in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Once Crohn’s disease has been identified, treatment normally begins with medication. A group of drugs known as 5-aminosalicylates are the mainstay of treatment for people with mild symptoms. However, these may be ineffective in people with moderate or severe symptoms, and often steroids are then given, on a short term basis, to reduce inflammation and calm the condition. These are not used over the long term, because although highly effective, they do have unwanted side effects. In addition, other medication may be required on an ad hoc basis. For example antibiotics are sometimes needed to fight a secondary infection, or iron supplements used to treat anemia.

If medication fails to alleviate the symptoms or if complications have occurred, surgery may be required to remove the affected part of the gut or other obstructions. Indeed some 80% of all sufferers with moderate symptoms will require some surgery during the course of their treatment. In addition a diet of easily digestible food may be prescribed for a few weeks during a flare up to give the body a chance to rest, after which a normal diet is slowly re-introduced.

At present there is no cure for Crohn’s disease and no known way to prevent it, but the symptoms can be treated and the periods of remission can be stretched to last several years. Most people are able to lead normal lives. The research and development of new medications for Crohn’s disease is continuing, and it seems likely that there will be a number of new treatments available in the near future.

Cholesterol Medications to Decrease the Risk of Heart Disease

by Rich Benvin

Today, the number of American adults who should seek medical advice in order to reduce their high blood cholesterol levels has reached over 100 million. One medication which has limited side effects and is known to lower cholesterol levels and fight heart disease whilst Americans are continually getting larger are statins.

There are things that can help you fight this problem. This article is designed to teach you how to do something about your cholesterol problems. First we will take a brief look at what cholesterol is and then we will show you how statin medications, prescribed by your doctor, can make you healthier. To treat high cholesterol there are many different types of statins, and we will review them for you.

Problems occur when there is an imbalance of cholesterol in your body. A waxy, fat resembling substance, cholesterol naturally manifests itself in cell walls and membranes everywhere in your body. One very important use of cholesterol is to produce many hormones that your body uses daily to live a normal life.

Your doctor may decide that you need help in controlling your cholesterol if you are not able to reduce it using natural treatments. Even if your doctor prescribes any of these medications, you must still follow through with healthy lifestyle treatments as well. There are several different types of medications used to lower cholesterol, but we will focus only on statins.

In order to know if you need these medications it is important you know both what statins are and also how they work to cut down your cholesterol levels in your body. HMG-CoA reductase is an enzyme in your body that is repressed by statins. This enzyme governs the rate cholesterol produces itself throughout your body. Anywhere from 20 to 60% is what statins are known to lower the body’s cholesterol levels by. Statins are the only drug that can truly lower your body’s Low Density Lipoprotein Levels (LDL). They do this by decreasing the production of cholesterol while at the same time increasing the liver’s ability to retract the LDL.

Statins not only decrease total cholesterol and triglycerides, but they can also produce a moderate increase of HDL (High Density Lipoproteins). Encouraging results can usually be seen as quickly as 4 to 6 weeks after beginning use of the medication. Statins are also known to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other possible coronary illnesses.

It is not advised to take statins if any of the following pertain to you: allergies to statins themselves or their ingredients; you have a history of myopathy; you have renal failure; you consistently consume inordinate amounts of alcohol; you have liver disease; or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your physician if you are unsure whether or not statin medications are right for you.

Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, Lescol, Altocor and Mevacor are all prescription brand name statins that you might recognize. Please know of certain food and/or drug interactions that may have adverse effects. If you drink more than a quart of grapefruit juice per day it can very well decrease the liver’s ability to process some statin drugs. It is critical to know that there are other medications that you might be taking that can possibly interact with the statins to cause some weighty side effects.

It’s important to let your doctor know about any other medication you are taking, whether prescription or non-prescription including vitamins, herbal supplements, medication for the immune system, other cholesterols drugs, medication for infections, birth control pills, medication for heart failure, HIV or AIDs, or Coumadin.

Although unlikely, it is possible for side effects to appear from the use of statins. If you happen to experience the following: vomiting, discolored urine, pain, muscle soreness, stomach pain, or weakness immediately stop taking the medication and contact your doctor.

Reducing the Effects of Diabetes

by Julia Hanf

Diabetes can have both short-term and long-term consequences. Discipline can help you reduce both sets of consequences.

Rapid spikes or dips in blood glucose level can result in several unpleasant effects: dizziness, disorientation, muscle weakness, nausea and others. For some diabetics, it’s very difficult to prevent this from happening at some time. But there are practices that can improve the odds.

Regular and careful monitoring is a must. It’s no picnic to endure a finger prick three times a day. For those who simply can’t muster the will, it is worthwhile to look into some of the newer glucose monitoring devices that don’t require it.

Some contain tiny, powerful lasers that create a hole through which blood oozes. They produce only a mild tingling sensation. One recent device senses glucose level through the skin using an infrared beam, requiring no blood sample at all.

The goal is to keep the glucose-insulin balance as close to normal levels as possible. Non-diabetics have a fasting glucose level under about 99 mg/dL. Even after a heavy meal, when glucose may rise to over 200 mg/dL, insulin is released which brings it back down within a couple of hours. That means that keeping the glucose level right isn’t so much achieving a static number as maintaining the correct dynamic balance.

Monitoring must include periodic doctor visits. An A1C test should be taken every three months. Many tests can measure the blood glucose level at a certain time; the A1C gives an average over a several months. HbA1C (glycated hemoglobin) gives the test its name.

Hemoglobin’s role is to carry oxygen from the red blood cells to the tissues. Hemoglobin is glycated when there is extra glucose in the blood. The A1C test can give an average glucose level, because glycated hemoglobin remains.

The effects of diabetes continue over the long-term. In the past, many diabetics would suffer from kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage and ills within a decade or so of the condition’s onset. Luckily this need not occur. Modern medical knowledge enables most diabetics to lead nearly normal lives, with few ill effects.

Much of this management is disciplined exercise and diet. Many diabetics can keep their glucose-insulin balance nearly normal through diet and exercise, without medicine.

This is possible because the lowering of body fat with exercise and diet helps the body maintain a better balance on its own. Body fat affects hormone production and release and it affects how the body responds to glucose levels. There is a definite correlation between body fat and the degree of diabetes, although researchers don’t understand all the factors involved.

One part of the puzzle is role lowering body fat plays in lowering the blood pressure. Chronic hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major contributor to the cardiovascular and nerve problems experienced by some diabetics.

With care the diabetic can lead a fairly normal life. Checking the blood glucose level a few times a day can mean fewer health problems and less worry in the long-run.

Is critical illness coverage necessary?

by Rob Fisher

Critical illness insurance is now one of the fastest growing types of insurance. According to tiscali.money, over one million critical illness policies will be sold in the UK in 2002 alone. Advanced medical treatments prolong the lives of many critically ill patients, creating the need for critical illness insurance.

Most people take the risk, hoping they will not suffer from a serious illness. Unfortunately, you are more likely to die of a critical illness before the age of 65. Statistics show that one out of 17 women under the age of 65 will suffer a heart attack. In addition, about one in seven females will develop some form of cancer. One in 27 women will suffer a stroke, and one in five women will suffer from other critical illnesses.

Men statistically, are at a higher risk for serious illnesses like a heart attack. Longer work hours and an overall stressful lifestyle are the main contributing factors. The statistics show that men have a one in 11 chance of contracting cancer before reaching 65 years of age. In addition, about one in seven men will experience a heart attack. Roughly 3% of all men will suffer from a stroke during their lifetimes, and 25% of all men will be stricken by other serious conditions.

Critical illness insurance may pay you out a tax free lump sum when you are diagnosed with a critical illness met by your insurances policy definitions. For lump sums to be obtained hassle free, you should read your critical illness policy documents with much attention to know exactly the range of diseases covered before you sign the agreement. Lets have a look at some recent statistics. According to tiscali.money, 80 percent of men and women aged between 40 to 45 may survive a critical illness such as heart attack. Out of these around 50 percent may still be alive ten years later.

About 40% of all patients diagnosed with serious illnesses, like cancer, are between 35 and 54 years of age. The good news is that all of them may live up to three years after diagnosis or treatment. It has been estimated that approximately 350,000 people are suffering from the debilitating effects of a stroke at any particular time.
