What Should You Expect After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery has been performed for more than fifty years now and, despite the fact that it does carry risks most patients are more than satisfied with the outcome and enjoy a an enormously improved standard of living. But there is a price to to be paid and you will need to lead a very different lifestyle following surgery which could be very difficult unless you are prepared for the change.
Some of the post-operative changes are obvious as the basic principle behind weight loss surgery is to significantly reduce the size of your stomach and restrict the quantity of food which you can eat. This simply means that the days of sitting down to a big meal are over.
However some of the other consequences of weight loss surgery are less obvious.
For example, even in small quantities the days of eating foods that are high in fat or sugar are also over. The penalties for eating such foods can be most unpleasant as their rapid absorption in your now shortened digestive tract can lead to very nasty feelings of faintness.
You will also discover that the dramatic change in your pattern of eating leaves you very short of water so that you have to get used to drinking small amounts of water during the day to avoid becoming dehydrated.
This is all very well but just what should you expect from gastric bypass surgery when it comes to weight loss?
Weight loss will of course vary from person to person but it is important to begin by understanding just how post-operative weight loss is measured.
Here you need to begin by calculating just how much excess weight you are carrying and this means working out your ideal weight. Working in pounds, for a man this is calculated as 106 plus 6 times your height in inches minus 60. For instance, for a man 5ft 10ins tall the ideal weight will be 106 + 6 x (70 – 60) which works out at 166 pounds. In the case of women the principle is the same but this time a women’s ideal weight is calculated as 100 plus 5 times her height in inches minus 60.
Therefore, if we take the example of the man above and give him a weight of 366 pounds then his excess weight is 200 pounds. Weight loss is then measured in terms of the percentage of excess weight lost over time. Therefore, if after 6 months he has lost 100 pounds then his weight loss will be 50 percent.
In the majority of cases you could expect to lose around 50 percent of your excess weight within 6 months of surgery climbing to around 70 percent one year after surgery and to possibly 80 percent at the end of 2 years. For most patients however weight loss will cease after 2 years and indeed some long-term weight gain will appear. Long-term weight re-gain is usually about 10 to 15 percent of your initial excess weight.
Once again, generally speaking, if you are very overweight you will shed a greater percentage of your excess weight (possibly as much as 90 to 95 percent) while if you are less overweight you may shed as little as 60 percent within 2 years of surgery.
You will rarely drop 100 percent of your excess weight and are not going to achieve your ideal weight through surgery. As a result, it is occasionally said that weight loss surgery is not completely successful. Despite this the overwhelming majority of patients would not agree with this statement and would say that the change in their quality of life is simply indescribable. Thousands of students flock to the Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India each year in hopes of finding that missing piece to life’s puzzle. The Institute’s style of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is particularly attractive to Westerners because they enjoy the physical rigor and discipline. While many forms of yoga are more about relaxing, this style is more about physically challenging poses that evoke mental release. Some people say the method attracts the “overachiever” personality type, but in reality it caters to people of every level.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was first brought to the Western world by the teachings of Patanjali Maharishi, a sage from Mysore India. He spoke about the significance of reaching internal purification and reconnecting with the “Universal Soul” through eight principles: moral codes, self-purification and study, posture, breath control, sense control, concentration, meditation and contemplation. Activities That Helped Raise Autism Awareness

Today, there are many organizations geared towards raising autism awareness. Two of the organizations that do their part to raise the awareness level for autistic spectrum disorders are The Autism Society of America and Autism Speaks. These are the two most popular organizations focused on helping individuals who have autism. These organizations work to raise money for research by hosting benefits and walks, among other programs. The more that is known about these disorders, the higher the likelihood of more breakthroughs in treatments.
The Autism Society of America, or ASA, began in 1965 by founder Bernard Rimland, Phd. The ASA is actually the largest, not to mention the oldest grassroots organization, in the autism community. Today, the ASA is well on its way to having over 200 nationwide chapters and has well over 120,000 members and supporters, all dedicated to raising autism awareness. Autism Speaks is an advocacy organization, based in New York City, which also works to raise the awareness level of autism and to promote research. This organization was founded in February of 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, with the hope of finding a cure for the different autism spectrum disorders. The Wright’s became seriously interested in the disorders after their grandson was diagnosed with autism.
The month of April has been designated as Autism Awareness Month. During April, U.S. television shows dedicate episodes to different aspects of autistic disorders. Also, many companies and organizations have teamed up to raise awareness for autism disorders and funds to help with research. In December 2007, a resolution that declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day was passed by the United Nations. Having awareness raised to these levels is extremely important if huge strides will ever be made in solving the autism puzzle.
Many have heard of autism, but unless you have been affected by the disorder or have a close friend or family member who has been diagnosed with one of the many autism spectrum disorders, then you many not fully understand it. Disorders of this nature normally do not “hit home” until it is witnessed first hand. Organizations such as AS, The ASA and The Walk for Autism Research program work to bring the effects of autism out in the open and show individuals the importance of further research. Only through more research and autism awareness will a cure ever be found.
Changing Ones Diet From Saturated Fats To PolyUnsaturated Fats Can Improve Health

A deficiency in essential fatty acids can be linked to many ailments. When the body lacks linoleic acid in the diet, adverse symptoms result. Such symptoms include: acne, changes in personality or behavior, gallbladder dysfunction, slow healing wounds, cardiovascular problems, prostate inflammation, thirst due to excessive perspiration, arthritis, miscarriage, poor growth, kidney problems, muscle tremors, skin disorders, and sterility in males. Low contents or a lack of linolenic acid in the diet can also cause many adverse symptoms. These symptoms include poor growth, learning disability, tingling in the extremities, impaired motor coordination, and poor vision.
When adequate amounts of dietary fatty acids are obtained in the deficient person, adverse symptoms will disappear. Unfortunately, long-term deficiencies of essential fatty acids can eventually lead to death. Because the human body requires forty-five known essential nutrients and requires linoleic acid more than any other, researchers estimate that the body needs at least three to six grams a day of linoleic acid in order to prevent deficiency symptoms. This is equivalent to one to two percent of your daily caloric intake.
However, a much larger amount can be helpful to encourage and preserve optimum health. Although the requirements are different for each person, factors such as stress, diet, and amount of physical activity that is engaged in daily must be taken into account. For example, an obese person who eats a lot of saturated fats will need a lot more EFA’s than a thin person who is cautious about the amount of saturated fats that are included in their diet. Saturated fats interfere with the absorption and metabolism of linoleic acid.
A well-balanced diet will include primary nutrients such as vitamins B3, B6, C, zinc, and vitamin A. This will help the body to utilize essential fatty acids much more efficiently. It should be mentioned that the ability of lipids to hold high levels of oxygen has negative effects for those who are obese. By having increased oxygen in fat reserves, one can experience lipid oxidation, which leads to free radical formation, which in turn increases many tissue pathologies. In order to avoid this process, a diet or supplementation that is rich in antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E is encouraged. Many factors can get in the way of fatty acid metabolism. These include a diet that is high in saturated fats and cholesterol, aging, alcohol, high blood sugar, viral infections, and aspirin use.
It is recommended that people stay away from fats that have been altered from their normal, health-giving state to the point in which they actually cause damage to the cells of the body. The Sauna Throughout The Ages

The sauna has been cherished by man since time immemorial, and is still treasured today. What is it that makes the sauna such a timeless pleasure?
A sauna is a small room or dwelling specially designed for bathers to experience wet or dry heat sessions. This takes place in a small room where bathers remove their clothing and assume a comfortable position while the hot temperature (greater than 80 °C) penetrates their pores. A sauna bath is not only relaxing but also generates profuse sweating. The detoxification has not only physical benefits, such as an improved immune system, but also psychological benefits, including a reduction in stress.
”Sauna” is world that developed in ancient Finland and means a traditional Finnish bath. The sauna consisted of a fire wherein stones were heated to high temperatures, then doused in water to release steam heat.Because of the extreme heat, individuals would remove their clothes for comfort.
Eventually the sauna was improved with the addition of a metal woodstove and chimney.Air temperature was typically set between 70 and 80 degrees Celsius but on occasion exceeded as much as 90 degrees Celsius. Spraying water onto the hot rocks helped perfect this experience by adding a soft steam.
