Cold Sore Virus – How Do I Get Rid Of It?

by Amelia Kimberly

If you have been afflicted with the cold sore virus, one of the things you may be wondering (apart from how to get rid of it) is what the difference is between the two different types of herpes that are known to cause cold sores and sexually transmitted diseases.

If you have cold sores, you’re not alone: Approximately 100 million Americans suffer with the herpes simplex type 1 virus. It’s this virus that we know causes cold sores. You know how badly cold sores hurt if you’ve ever had one.

To understand the difference between these two viruses, let’s look at them up close.

Herpes simplex type 2 virus, or HSV-2 for short, is what causes genital herpes. Somewhere around 22% of Americans are infected with HSV-2.

The most disturbing part is that of all the people infected, two thirds of them aren’t even aware that they carry the virus. Since they don’t know they need to make changes to their daily routine, it’s even easier for them to spread the virus.

They usually spread HSV-2 by having unprotected sex. However, you need to understand that you can still be at risk for contracting HSV-2 even if you have protected sex.

The cold sore virus that causes those blisters on your mouth is called herpes simplex type 1. This is extremely contagious! You should avoid any direct skin-to-skin contact when you have an outbreak.

It is important to not have skin-to-skin contact with a newborn if you have an outbreak of cold sores. The herpes virus is extremely dangerous for babies in their first few weeks of life.

It’s important to monitor your symptoms if you carry the cold sore virus. Whenever you start feeling the first symptoms, you can help yourself heal a lot faster by taking the correct measures.

Don’t wait until the blister forms or starts to weep. When that happens, it’s too late to try and prevent its two week existence.

Never forget that cold sores are highly contagious before they are completely healed up. Even after the skin clears up, there’s still a risk of giving that cold sore virus to someone else.

If you find that your cold sore is taking more than two weeks to clear up, seek advice from a doctor.
