Ginkgo biloba is used traditionally by Chinese. Leaves of ginkgo biloba contain medicinal properties and its extract is used to improve circulation and memory. It is the most widely researched herbal medicine.

Medicinal Constituents of Ginkgo Biloba: Flavonoid glycosides: Have antioxidant properties and fight with free radical injury. Terpene lactones: Also called ginkgolides; have antagonistic activity for platelet activating factor (prevent blood from clotting)

Uses of Ginkgo Biloba: Memory improvement and medicine for Alzheimer’s disease Studies suggest ginkgo helps to improve memory and learning. It has been found effective for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. These are attributed to its effect on increasing blood flow to brain and its antioxidant properties.

Vascular diseases: It is used in peripheral vascular disease for treating intermittent claudication. It improves pain free walking distance. Tinnitus Ginkgo is moderately useful in treating tinnitus. This effect is largely attributed to increased blood flow. Other Ginkgo is also used for sexual dysfunction, altitude sickness, headaches, asthma and vertigo.

Side Effects of Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo biloba extract is considered as a safe drug. Side effects are generally rare. In some patients headaches, dizziness, gastrointestinal upset and skin reactions were reported. Bleeding complications might occur with use of ginkgo. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using ginkgo.

Interactions: Ginkgo interacts with blood thinners like warfarin, aspirin and other anti platelet agents. It might enhance the effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (an antidepressant medication) Always check with your doctor before using ginkgo biloba.
