SNORING – FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW
There are various different reasons, which is why a person will snore as they sleep at night. However, if the problem is left untreated this may well lead to a person suffering from other health issues because of it, one of these being sleep apnea. Yet although a snoring is a problem for the person suffering from it, it can also be a problem for those who they live with as well.
A person who snores makes a very loud harsh or hoarse breathing sound when they inhale and exhale as they sleep. This is because as they breathe in or out the air causes the tissue in their upper airway (in the nose and throat) to vibrate and so this is when the snoring sound occurs. Unfortunately, because this is a completely involuntary action many people when they sleep do not even realize that they are snoring.
Generally, it is the palate, along with the uvula and tonsils, which are to be found in a person’s upper airway, are the items that are causing the snoring as they obstruct it. There are a number of different causes as to why a person will snore and below we take a look at what some of these are.
1. The muscles, which are found in the person’s throat and tongue, are not as strong as they should be. Because of this, the tongue is more likely to fall backwards into the throat and so obstructing it, which makes it more difficult for the person to breathe.
2. For some people their snoring is caused because there is an excess amount of tissue in the throat area and is often related to a person being overweight. This excess amount of tissue results in an obstruction forming in a person’s airway and prevents the easy movement of air through it as they breathe.
3. For some people their snoring could be caused because either or both of the palate and uvula are too soft. When these are too soft then again they will help to obstruct the airway and so restrict the movement of air through it as a person breathes.
4. One other cause for why a person may snore is that their nasal passages have become obstructed. Either this can be caused by too much tissue or because there is a build up of mucus in the part of the body.
If you are someone whose snoring is being caused by one of the above mentioned there are devices and remedies that one can now use to help solve the problem. Some people have found that applying a nasal strip prior to going to bed is effective. Whilst others have found that using, a stop snoring spray or a device for placing in the mouth is effective for them. But for those whose condition may become severe then they may find that the only alternative is to undergo surgery such as Somnoplasty to really find a cure to their snoring problems.
