It is believed by the Chinese that acne is caused by heat and toxins carried in the bloodstream. Some people believe that acne is the result of poisons that are discharged into the skin due to poor digestion. Although opinions vary on the cause, most agree that there are several alternative treatments that can prevent or even cure acne.

Diet and hygiene play a big role in alternative acne treatments and it is important to consume a low fat, vitamin-rich diet while keeping the skin clean. Saturated fat can cause tissue damage that leads to inflammation, which is why it is important to limit fats in the diet. Another method of choice is tea tree oil, which is also applied directly on the skin. It is believed that this will prevent bacteria from growing on the skin.

Exfoliants such as alpha-hydroxyl acids, glycolic and lactic acids found in citrus fruits can be used to help treat acne. It is believed that they help prevent the build up of dead skin cells. In one remedy, a mixture of lemon juice and water can be placed on the face and rinsed off after about ten minutes. If a “burning sensation” occurs, the water concentration in the mixture can be increased.
