Testing Strips For Yeast Infection

by Sara Gillispie

Women who have suffered from vaginal itching or burning can breathe a sigh of relief at a new innovation. The FDA has approved testing strips for yeast infections. No longer will women who have had a previous yeast infection have to wait for a diagnosis.

These kits use test strips for yeast infection made of litmus paper. The litmus paper tests the pH of the vagina. If you ever took chemistry or tested a swimming pool you used a pH test similar to these kits.

Much research has been done showing how the pH of yeast infections, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis can be the marker showing the type of infection. A normal vagina’s pH ranges from 4.0-4.5. With bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis the pH rises above 4.5.

Recognizing this several companies designed testing kits so women can self-diagnose whether or not they have a yeast infection. The companies modified the litmus paper to an easily used swab or panty liner.

The pHEM-Alert kit and the Vagilisil Screening Kit for Vaginal Infections both use a swab. Following the kit directions, the woman inserts the swab into her vagina. She then removes the swab and checks the results against the guide in the kit.

The Fem-V uses a pantyliner with a pH strip in the center. The woman wears the pantyliner until the strip is wet with discharge or for 6-12 hours. She then removes the liner and places it in the special drying tray. The liner color is checked against the guide in the kit.

Without wasting time the test strips for yeast infection give women the option of starting the correct treatment of symptoms quickly and easily. If a woman has never had a vaginal infection, she is urged to check with her health care provider before starting any treatment.

In studies reported on Medscape women who self-diagnose yeast infections by symptoms are accurate only 33% of the time. Adding test strips for yeast infection increases the accuracy to an amazing 96%!

If a woman wants peace of mind she is making the correct self-diagnosis of yeast infection, then test strips for yeast infection are the first choice for the smart woman.
