The Two Types of Home-Based Entrepreneur

by Home Office Success Guru Jeff Landers

Don’t deceive yourself. Having business equipment in your home office doesn’t make you an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs must be visionaries. The mindset of an entrepreneur is always focused on the future. Instead of defining themselves by where they are at present, they define themselves by where they know they’ll be in the future.

Today is the time for you to become the visionary for your own business- to take one small, tiny step toward the company you dreamed of having when you were sitting in that cubicle working for your overbearing bosses and that soulless corporation.

If your business is just treading water, the first thing you need to do before you can transform your home-based business into everything you dreamed it would be, is to figure out what type of entrepreneur you really are. To be successful, your business ought to match your personality. Do you only want a small business that meets your needs and provides a decent livelihood? Or do you want to build it into a mini empire? Try to visualize the perfect business for you.

I’ve discovered two very different types of home-based entrepreneur. I call them the ‘Growth Maven’ and the ‘Lifestyle Guru’.

‘Growth Mavens’ think big, and are fiercely ambitious. The Growth Maven will initially operate his business out of his home in order to save money, but he’s itching to take the company to the big leagues. His goal is to grow his one-man show into a corporation that employs dozens or even hundreds of people. He knows that with enough grit and the right vision, he could be the next mega-star like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. He knows there is no limit to how much money he can earn, and he is determined to constantly improve his products and services. But first he has to get out of his home office.

The ‘Lifestyle Guru’ made the dream happen the first day that he didn’t go into the office. His dream was to leave the soulless corporation behind and be his own boss. He hates the commute, the suit and tie, the cubicle, the office politics, and the crazy, overbearing bosses. He wants more-to not just feel like he is pushing paper until 6 o’clock. He wants to feel a sense of contribution and pride in his work. And he wants to do it his way.

The Lifestyle Guru wants to wear pajamas to work and knock off at 3 p.m. for a few hours so he can catch his kid’s soccer match. He doesn’t mind clearing out his e-mail in-box after his wife and kids are in bed. Sometimes he works on the weekends, sometimes he doesn’t. He knows there is a limit to the amount of money he can make, but he is bringing in a comfortable six-figure income and he has more leisure time to spend with his family and friends. When it works, it all feels pretty good.

You probably already have some idea whether you are a Growth Maven or a Lifestyle Guru, but if you are sitting on the fence and not sure in which direction you’d like to go, then I have a quiz available online and in my book that should help you figure that out.
