Bouldering – Climbing Well Yet Low

by Aazdak Alisimo

If you decide to go climbing on the spur of the moment, it can be difficult to do a full climb because you need equipment, support and so on. One way around this is to go bouldering. It is also a great way to work on your technique and strength.

Bouldering is not about scaling great heights. Instead, it is about pushing your technique in a low risk environment. You can climb straight up the boulder, but are really better off trying different moves across the face.

The goal of climbing is to get from one point to another. Most climbs have set routes. The cool thing about bouldering is it does not. You can create all kinds of different routes across a boulder to keep things interesting and test yourself.

For some climbers, bouldering has overtaken wall climbing as their favorite. Why? Well, an boulder with an interesting face and angles can offer up 10, 20 or more routes. You can almost develop a harmony with the rock and it keeps things interesting.

Once you get into bouldering, there is a tendence to forget about safety. How banged up can you get if you are only 8 feet up? You would be surprised. Broken arms and ankles happen. Always use a crash pad to cush the brunt of falls.

The same goes for avoiding injuries. You will constantly see people just jump on a boulder route without warming up at all. This is a recipe for an injury. Your shoulder has to carry the same weight whether you are 8 feet in the air or eighty. Warm up!

Buildering is a variation of bouldering that is practiced by many a climber. It is not exactly bouldering and not exactly cliff face climbing. Instead, certain building fronts offer a simply irresistable route to climb.

I’ll admit buildering can be a good bit of fun. That being said, a fall can lead to disastrous results since the ground is often concrete. The police in just about every city, town and county also seem to have a universally negative view on the practice. Enough said.

Back to bouldering. Overall, it is my favorite climbing option. Why? You can do it at the spur of the moment, you can really push your skill, the same boulder offers a lot over variations and it is very safe.
