Deburring Catridge Rolls

by Hispanic

Cartridge rolls, one of several types of deburring tools, are manufactured by wrapping abrasive cloth materials around appropriately-sized mandrel. Available with aluminum oxide grain, silicon carbide grain or zirconia/alumina grain, units are suited for polishing, blending, deburring and flash removal operations. Fresh abrasive grain is exposed as outer layer of cartridge roll wears away. Cartridge rolls are available in 1/8-11/2 in. diameter and 3/4-2 in. length with grits from 36-320.

Designed to be durable and virtually indestructible, cartridge rolls can be straight, half-taper, full taper and sidewall. Effective in removing edge breaking and machine tool marks, such rolls are often connected to a hand-held deburring tool.

Burrs are the normal by product of the stamping process. Burrs are often not acceptable, usually for safety reasons, either for handling or for product safety (burrs cutting into insulation, or mechanical chafing). On the other hand, deburring is done by tumbling parts in a barrel or a vibratory bowl, along with finishing media. Ceramic media is often used for steels. For softer materials, plastic media, walnut shells etc can be used. This type of deburring is usually confined to unfinished materials. For materials that are already finished, such as pre-plated or pre-painted materials, other forms of deburring such as belt sanding or hand filing will have to be done with the associated higher costs.

Deburring may be accomplished by one of several methods. Abrasive substances may be applied, or abrasive cloths may be used to rub the metal in order to remove thin shavings and small notches, as well as to polish the piece (hand deburring). In other cases, sanding may be necessary, even if it means rigorous sanding with a machine for more troublesome deformities (semiautomatic deburring, abrasive flow machining, thermal energy method, and so on). Among all the types, semiautomatic deburring and hand deburring are the only ones that use cartridge rolls; repetitive filing or use of a grinder to smooth away nicks and fragments are key in cartridge roll deburring.

Yes, the use of cartridge rolls for deburring is labor-intensive manual work, and the process must be done in a controlled or steady manner or else the part or material you’re deburring may be thrown, which can ruin the product and cause you serious injury. Also, cartridge rolls need to be changed constantly because they wear out. Nevertheless, nothing beats the meticulousness and exactness of manual labor. Debur away at your own risk.
