Why are Record Numbers of Adults Enrolling in College?
More adults are now enrolled in colleges and universities than ever.
There are several reasons for this trend. One is that online education offers adults the opportunity to continue their education without neglecting their career or other obligations.
The greatly increased availabilty of financial aid is another major reason for the increased number of working adults in college.
The perceived value of online education has also been important in the growth of adult enrollment in degree programs. Once regarded with considerable skepticism, online degrees are today regarded by many as being the full equivalent of traditional educational programs.
CLEP…the College Life Experience Program has also been an important factor in getting adults back to school. And, why not? Experience-based credits reduce the cost of earning a degree and may also reduce the time required by a full year.
While most of the growth in adult higher education has taken place in online degree and certificate programs, campuses are also attracting more adults by offering evening and weekend classes, and improving academic advising for their adult degree-seekers.
Convenience, the availability of scholarships and financial aid, the growth of online education, and other factors have been major contributors to the huge growth of adult higher education. But, most adults currently enrolled in degree programs will tell you the primary reason for their return to school is to acquire the skills and credentials necessary for career advancement.
If you are not already doing so, you might want to start seriously thinking of earning your next degree. While it does require commitment and work, it has never been more convenient or more affordable. And degrees have never been more valuable.
